Mastering the Art of the Prompt: the Key to Dialoguing with Artificial Intelligence
Did you know that a simple phrase can make all the difference to an AI's response?
Formulate it well, and you get a clear, inspiring, perfectly structured text. Formulate it badly... and you end up with a vague, off-topic or disappointing answer.
This power is that of the prompt.
In our AI training courses, we've already explored the full potential of generative artificial intelligence. So it's only natural that we should now turn our attention to one of the most decisive aspects of their use: the art of correctly formulating a prompt.
Whether you use ChatGPT, Claude, Mistral, Midjourney or DALL-E, it all starts with a well thought-out instruction. And contrary to popular belief, "asking the AI a question" is only the starting point. It's really a matter of learning how to structure your requests, contextualize them and guide the style and form of your response.
In this article, let's discover together how to learn AI through the art of the prompt, with concrete examples, practical tips and use cases for all levels. Whether you're a beginner or already a bit experienced, you'll walk away with a new key skill for dialoguing with generative AIs like a real pro.
🔹 1. What's a prompt?
Imagine you're talking to an ultra-competent person, capable of writing, coding, drawing or explaining any concept to you... but waiting for you to give it clear instructions to act. That's exactly what generative AI is. And the way you talk to it is what we call a prompt.
In simple terms, a prompt is an instruction you give to the AI: a question, a request, an instruction. It's your way of saying to the tool: "Make me a summary of this text", "Write a poem in the style of Victor Hugo", "Generate an image of a teaching robot in a classroom", or even "Explain photosynthesis to me as if I were 10 years old."
This little message you send is not insignificant. It totally determines the response you receive.
And the magic happens especially when you know exactly how to formulate this request.
Why is this so important? Because AI can't read your mind. If your prompt is blurred, vague or too short, you'll get a response that's often disappointing or imprecise. Conversely, a well-constructed prompt will result in content that's creative, useful, targeted... and often bluffing!
And this principle applies to all tools:
- ✍️ ChatGPT, Claude, Mistral for the texts
- 🎨 Midjourney, DALL-E for images
- 🎼 Suno, Soundful or Aiva for music
- 🎬 Sora, Runway, Pika Labs for videos
Whatever the tool, it all starts with a good prompt.
🔹 2. The ingredients of a good prompt
Writing a good prompt isn't just throwing a vague question at the AI and hoping for a miracle. It's like cooking a good recipe: you need the right ingredients, in the right order. Here are the 4 pillars that turn a simple message into a powerful and effective prompt.
1. Clarity: be explicit about what you want
A good prompt starts with a clear request. AI doesn't guess your intentions.
👉 Avoid: "Tell me about the environment".
✅ Prefer: "Write a paragraph on the consequences of global warming in France, with an educational tone."
The more precise your instructions, the more relevant your answer will be.
2. Context: give AI its bearings
AI works best when it knows who it's addressing, in what situation and with what objective. Context is what makes it possible to personalize the response.
Example:
"Explains Machine Learning." → too vague.
"Explains Machine Learning to a 3rd grader, using simple everyday analogies." → much better!
This is exactly what we apply in our AI training programs: learning to contextualize to better guide results.
3. Structure: specify the expected form
Are you waiting for a list? A summary? A course sheet? A chart? Just say so! AI can adapt to any format, but it needs to be told clearly.
For example:
"List 5 benefits of artificial intelligence in education, in bullet form."
VS
"Talk about AI and education."
See the difference? Structuring your prompt means structuring the answer.
4. Tone and style: adapt your voice
The AI can write like an expert, a journalist, a humorist, or even in the style of your favorite authors. All you have to do is ask.
Example:
"Write an explanation of nuclear fusion in the style of an enthusiastic teacher addressing children."
You can also specify the level of language: formal, simple, colloquial...
In short, a good prompt is clear, contextualized, structured and stylized. These are the foundations for learning how to collaborate effectively with an AI. And to understand them properly, nothing beats concrete examples... which we'll see right away in the next section!
🔹 3. Examples of prompts using different tools
Now that you know the ingredients of a good prompt, let's see how to apply them concretely with different generative artificial intelligence tools. Each AI has its own specificities, but the good reflexes remain the same: clarity, context, structure, style.
Here are a few ideas to inspire you and get you started: text, image, music or video.
✍️ Pour ChatGPT, Claude, Mistral... (Text)
These AIs are most commonly used for writing, explaining, generating content or solving problems.
Examples of prompts:
-"Write a 45-minute lesson plan on introduction to artificial intelligence for second graders, with fun activities."
-"Summarize George Orwell's 1984 for me in less than 200 words, as if you were talking to a high school student."
-"Generate a Python code that sorts a list of numbers in descending order, then explain it line by line."
-"Create a revision sheet on neural networks, BTS computer science level."
Perfect for educational, professional or personal use, as part of a training or teaching project.
🎨 For Midjourney, DALL-E... (Image)
These AIs transform text into images. The prompt must be descriptive, visual and sometimes very detailed.
Examples of prompts:
-"A futuristic classroom with humanoid robots teaching kids, colorful lighting, cyberpunk atmosphere, digital boards - 4K, concept art."
-"A retro 60s poster about artificial intelligence, pop art style, bright colors, bold typography."
-"Realistic portrait of an AI teacher with a robot assistant in a futuristic classroom."
Ideal for illustrating an article, creating visuals for your courses, or working on visual creativity.
🎵 Pour Suno, Soundful, Aiva... (Music)
These tools generate music from text instructions.
Examples of prompts:
-"Calm, inspiring background music, perfect for an educational video on the history of AI."
-"Create a happy melody with electronic sounds, to illustrate an educational sequence on robots."
Great for enriching educational audio or video projects, or stimulating students' musical creativity.
🎬 For Runway, Pika Labs... (Video)
These platforms allow you to create or edit videos based on descriptions. Prompts must describe a scene, an atmosphere, an action.
Examples of prompts:
-"Animation of a robot explaining the concept of Machine Learning to children, in a futuristic classroom, joyful atmosphere."
-"Short video (10s) illustrating the word 'prompt' in a visual and dynamic way."
Perfect for creating immersive educational content or capturing attention in projects.
As you can see, each tool has its own language, but the foundations remain the same. By varying the use cases - text, image, sound or video - you develop real agility in the way you interact with AI.
And that's just the beginning: in the next section, we'll be sharing concrete tips for sharpening your prompts like a pro.
🔹 4. Tips for progress
Like any skill, the art of prompting is refined with practice. Good news: it's never been easier to train and improve! Here are a few practical tips to quickly boost your level and achieve even more impressive results with your prompts.
1. Draw inspiration from the best
No need to start from scratch: many sites share community-tested and approved prompts.
👉 Where to look?
-PromptBase: paid and premium prompts for various tools.
-FlowGPT: a free library, sorted by use (education, productivity, creativity...).
-AIPRM: Chrome extension to enrich your prompts directly in ChatGPT.
It's a great way to learn by example, especially if you're just starting out.
2. Practice reformulation
The same prompt can be rewritten 100 different ways... with radically different results. Try rewording your instructions, adding or removing an element, testing different formulations.
👉 This helps you understand how the AI reacts to each nuance.
Simple exercise :
- Take a basic prompt.
- Test it with different styles, levels of detail or formats.
- Compare responses: what happens if you change the tone? The target audience? The requested format?
3. Add clear constraints
Constraints don't limit AI. On the contrary, they guide it. The more you set a framework, the more targeted the response.
👉 Examples of useful constraints :
-Length: "in 100 words", "in one sentence".
-Target audience: "for 5th graders", "like a TEDx conference".
-Style: "in the style of Jules Verne", "in informal conversation mode".
-Objective: "to convince a customer", "to lead a workshop".
These tips are particularly useful in a training or educational context, as they force us to think in terms of clarity and pedagogical intent.
4. Create your own prompts "recipes
Over time, you'll find that certain prompts work very well for your needs. Keep them safe! We often talk about prompt templates: ready-to-use structures that you can adapt to suit any situation.
👉 Example of a "recipe" :
"You are a [role]. Your mission is to [objective], for an audience [level]. Answer in [style] tone, in [expected form] format. Here is the context information: [content]."
Gradually, these habits will enable you to go from being a simple user to a promptmaster. And the good news? You don't need any technical skills to achieve this. Just a little curiosity, trial and error... and creativity!
🔹 5. Why the art of the prompt is becoming a key skill
We're hearing more and more about "prompt engineering", and it's not just a fad. It's a skill for the future, already considered essential in many professions. Understanding how to talk to an AI is a bit like knowing how to code in the 2000s... but accessible to all.
🚀 Because AIs become working partners
Today, artificial intelligences are no longer mere gadgets: they help us write, create, plan, teach and innovate.
Whether in a classroom, a marketing department, a freelancer or a major corporation, AI becomes a true co-pilot.
But like any co-pilot, you need to know how to give him the right instructions.
The more accurate your prompts, the more powerful your results. And what you gain is time, clarity, creativity... and a strategic advantage.
🎓 Because it's a skill that can be taught - and learned
It's not just for engineers. The art of the prompt can (and should) be taught as early as middle school, or even earlier. We already learn to read, write, code... Why not talk to an AI?
At Learning Robots, we believe deeply in this approach. In our workshops and AI training programs, we show how to turn students into creators, explorers, active users of AI - not just spectators.
AI education involves prompt practice, because that's where interaction, reflection and the development of critical thinking take place.
🎨 Because it unleashes creativity
Prompting isn't just about being "good with AI". It's about becoming more creative, more agile, more strategic. You learn to formulate your ideas, to guide a machine, to think as a system.
And these are valuable skills, whatever your profession or age.
It's no coincidence that more and more artists, authors, teachers and entrepreneurs are integrating generative AI into their daily lives. But the ones who come out on top... are those who have mastered prompts.
Learning to prompter well means regaining power in a world where AI is taking up more and more space. It's the first step towards making full, intelligent and creative use of technology.
And good news: you're already learning.
